“Excuse me?” She quickly got up from the sleeping on the recliner inside her brother’s hospital suite after hearing the voice. When her eyes landed on him, she felt her world stop. His handsome features made him look like he’s an angel. Plus he’s wearing his all white uniform.
“N-neh?” She stuttered, her heart beating faster. It’s her first time seeing him do the rounds for his brother. She doesn’t even know that there’s a nurse like him that works for that hospital.
He started asking questions about her brother’s condition. She thankfully answered them without stuttering. His presence is intimidating enough. But his voice, oh dear. It was like a sweet melody to her ears. His voice is so soothing that it suites his very angel like image.
“Where’s your mom?” He then asked her, checking her brother’s vital signs. She didn’t expect that he would be the one that would initiate a conversation.
“Uh, she went out to buy some foods for us.” There she was, standing on one side, staring at him like some puppy. Her heart was captivated by him that moment. Though it’s just the first time, she can’t help herself. Maybe the thing that people say about love at first sight is real after all.
“Oh. Sorry if I have to disturb your sleep.” He apologized, an angelic smile on his face. The moment he smiled, butterflies started to fill in her stomachs. How can someone smile’s be so angelic and pure?
“Ani. It’s okay. It’s my job to look after my brother anyway.” She returned a small smile at him, hiding her nervousness.
“Your brother is doing fine. I’ll be back in an hour to check on him again. You can go back to sleep now.” He simply said, his voice melting him. He sounds like he cared for her so much. Or was she just being delusional?
“Uh, okay.” He was about to open the door already when he turned back at her.
“What’s your name? I’m sorry. I just have to ask.” There goes his smile again.
“Huh? It’s ah, Vans.”
“Nice meeting you Vans. I’m Kyuhyun.” And with that, he left the room leaving her in awe. He did asked for her name. And he told him hers. Kyuhyun.
She would surely wait for his next round. The guy seemed interesting. And he looks like an intelligent person, like there’s a lot to hear from him.
The few days passed by with luck on her side. Kyuhyun had been continuously doing the usual check up rounds for her brother. And that gave her a chance to have tiny chit chats with Kyuhyun himself.
“The doctor already advised him to eat. Though he’s still on soft diet.” She can hear her mother telling Kyuhyun but his eyes weren’t on the clipboard nor her mother. He was looking at her, a small smile on his face. She smiled back, her stomach being filled by small butterflies again.
She knew that she’s not supposed to feel intimidated by his looks, but he’s making her feel like it! She can’t really reason out something why she’s feeling like that. While her mother was busy talking to him, she quickly excused herself. She didn’t even noticed that she’d been holding her breath all along when she was inside the room.
“You looked tired Vanessa-ssi.” She turned to see Ryeowook, smiling at her. She made a face and joined him inside the nurse’s station. For a week of stay in that hospital, she already grew close to those nurses who’d been present there always, like Ryeowook.
“Just a little.”
“Kyuhyun’s there? Isn’t he?” He said, not even sounding like its a question. She just nodded, a pout on her face.
“Why is he so perfect?” She whined, making the nurse next to her laugh in amusement.
“Ask his parents. Not me.”
“Ask who’s parents?” They both turned to Kyuhyun who just entered the station, placing down his clipboard on the counter top.
“No one. None of your business.” Ryeowook was the one who answered, using his so ever playful tone.
“He’s just playing with you Kyuhyun-ssi.” She said, poking her tongue out on Ryeowook.
They just sat there, talking about random things. And out of the blue, Kyuhyun took out his cellphone, handed it to her asking for her number. She hesitated for a bit before typing her number. He didn’t just asked for her number!
“Kyuhyun will take you out for some coffee for sure.” Ryeowook butted in, getting up from his chair. “It’s time for me to do some rounds.” He then added, before leaving the two of them.
“Don’t listen to him. He’s just jealous.” Kyuhyun told her, a smile playing on his lips.
“Arasso. You wouldn’t even do it right?” She said, smiling at him as she waited for his answer.
“Of course.” He even added a wink. Though deep inside, she really wanted to hear him say that what Ryeowook said will happen.
The room seemed to suffocate her already. She’d been inside her brother’s hospital suite for the last four days. And with that, she only saw Kyuhyun thrice. It kind of disappointed her, cause he’s just one of the reasons why she was staying there the first place.
“Mom. I’ll just have a walk around.” She told her mom who’s watching tv before quietly going out of the room. It feels so good to finally stretch her body. She even feel like she gained some weight.
A few meters away from her, a familiar figure caught her eyes. That tall figure, his hair and she can hear him talk in a quiet voice.
Kyuhyun.
She wanted to retreat back and just go back to their room but it’s too late. Kyuhyun had turned to her direction already, a smile creeping on his face when he saw her. Practically dragging her feet, she continued walking until she reached him.
“Going somewhere?” He asked, smiling at her.
“Just goin’ for a walk.” She answered, trying to make her voice sound normal.
“Oh. Do you want some company? I just finished doing my rounds.” She surely can’t just decline his invitation. And he did take her silence as a yes. She walked ahead of him, secretly preparing herself. Of course she had to think of possible conversation that should be exchanged with him. He’s Cho Kyuhyun. The perfect nurse she sees of him.
“Seems like you haven’t been sleeping lately eh?” She jumped a little hearing him. He was already walking along side her, the advantage of being gifted with long legs.
“Ha? Just a bit. You know, I have to look out for my brother.” She shyly answered, feeling a bit awkward being that close to him. Plus his intimidating presence.
“Aigoo. That’s bad. You should also look out for yourself. And your brother’s fine already.” He reminded her. His words made her heart fluster a little. He sounded so concerned about her.
“N-neh.” That’s all she can answer him. He was smiling like an angel at her, his eyes on her only. How can she not stutter with Kyuhyun being like that?
“Oh. Do you mind if I ask you to join me for a late lunch? The other nurses are done already.” He asked, a hopeful look in his eyes. Again, another invitation that she can’t decline.
She only nodded, and Kyuhyun smiled leading her to where the direction of the canteen is. A few people were there, eating quietly. She waited for him, sitting on a vacant table. She wasn’t expecting that he would actually buy her lunch also. He walked towards her, a tray full of food on his hands.
“Here. You should finish all of these with me.” He smiled, motioning at the foods laid out on their table.
“Neh? You said we’re only going for a walk.” She can’t help but purse her lip a little, forming her lips into a pout. While Kyuhyun just laughed, before digging in to his foods.
She had no choice but to eat also. He was eating deliciously right in front of her. And the poor guy seemed so hungry like he hasn’t eaten for weeks.
“Oh. Sorry. I’m just really hungry.” He cheekily said when he saw her staring at him as he was eating his second bowl of rice.
“Ani. It’s okay. It’s you who should really eat. You’re doing rounds and things. That surely can make you hungry.” He just smiled after hearing her. His smile can really bring her heart a stir of emotions. It might be a simple action but to her, it’s too extra ordinary.
“Aigoooo. I’m so full now. We should really take a walk then.” She chuckled, as they were walking out of the cafeteria. She never thought she would see that side of Kyuhyun.
“Neh.” They walked out to the hospital garden, a few patients also having a taste of the fresh air. She glanced at Kyuhyun who seems to enjoy it also. He has his eyes closed as he took a deep breath, inhaling the fresh air.
“Chunsa.” She whispered, looking at Kyuhyun. He really looked like an angel. The view is too perfect that it hurts to even watch.
“Neh?” She blankly stared at him when he turned to her. She felt embarassed, to act like that in front of Kyuhyun. She wasn’t even usually like that. Where did the tough Vanessa Chung went? That is surely not her.
“Aniyo. Aniyo.” She quickly said, her cheeks flushing red. She had to look away so Kyuhyun wouldn’t notice.
“Nurse Cho Kyuhyun, you’re needed in Room #143.” The both of them carefully listened again to the voice that aired around the whole hospital. After confirming that it’s Kyuhyun, they hesitantly got up, Kyuhyun looking apologetic towards her.
“Aish. I’m really sorry Vans. I didn’t made sure that they all know I’m having a break.” He added after his sorry as they were quickly heading back to the floor where Kyuhyun’s station and her brother’s room were.
“Gwenchana. I understand.” That’s all she can say. After all, she can’t demand anything from him. Who is she even to be so demanding to him? They barely know each other in the first place.
But why is she really feeling so disappointed?
“I’ll see you later Kyu.” She said, giving him a small wave before running back to the direction where her brother’s room is. She probably still have to wait days again before she could see Kyuhyun again. And there’s no chance anymore for sure. The day after tomorrow, her brother would be discharged out of the hospital already.
“Wae? What’s wrong with you Vanessa?” She got a bit startled hearing her brother’s question. She didn’t even noticed him being wide awake.
“Nothing. I’m fine. I’m just sleepy.” She threw herself on the recliner chair, covering herself with the blanket. That was her last chance to get closer to Kyuhyun but it just slipped out of her hands that easily. Aish.
The next day, which happened to be Valentines day, there were no signs of him. According to her mom, the whole hospital was decorated with hearts and cupids to let the patients feel the essence of the hearts day. But she was mournful. How can she enjoy that day if there’s no Kyuhyun present at all?
She decided to have a stroll around when lunch time came. Hoping that he would be the one she’ll see sitting inside the nurse’s station. But there’s no smiling angel sitting there. Only the bubbly nurse Kim Ryeowook.
“You’re looking for Kyuhyun-ah?” He playfully asked, motioning for her to seat on the vacant chair next to him. He was sitting patiently there, scanning the records of the patients.
“He’s not in for duty right?” She asked, sighing. She picked up the medical clipboard that has Kyuhyun’s name on it. A smile formed on her lips as her eyes roamed on the paper with his neat handwriting. It’s really Kyuhyun’s personality to be someone so close to perfection.
“ Mianhae.” That was all Ryeowook can say. She can’t complain, she has no right to.
“Oh well, happy valentines to you Vanessa-ssi.” He greeted, taking out a small pack of chocolate from his coat pocket.
“This isn’t from any of your patients right?” She teased, taking it.
“Of course not. And what kind of patient would give a nurse like me a very expensive chocolate like that?” He sure has a point. The chocolate is really one of those expensive brands. And it also happens to be one of her favorites.
“Thanks for this Ryeowook-ssi. Though I haven’t got you anything. Mian.” She apologized, smiling faintly at him. The nurse just smiled at her, ruffling her hair a bit.
How can he not be here at this time? Aish.
With a heavy heart, she headed back to her brother’s room. Her mom was currently talking to her auntie when she walked in. They were obviously discussing about Kyuhyun with her brother.
“I haven’t seen Kyuhyun. Isn’t he on duty?” Her brother was obviously teasing her. She just glared at him, restraining herself from giving her brother a hit.
“Aigooo. Don’t be sad Vanessa. Kyuhyun might show up later.” Her mom comforted her, a playful smile on her face. Seriously? How can these people tease her at times like this?
“Don’t he dare show up his face.” She grumbled, crossing her arms over her chest. She doesn’t care anymore, whether he shows up or not. Her Valentines Day is ruined anyway.
It was past 11 already yet she’s still wide awake. Her mom and her brother were peacefully asleep already. She’d been like that the whole time they were at the hospital. There should be someone awake when a nurse checks on her brother.
“Knock knock.” She looked at the door when she heard Ryeowook’s voice. He quietly entered the room with a smile. “Midnight check.” He told her.
“Go ahead. He fell asleep around 9.” She informed the nurse as he checkas on her brother. She just stood by his side, watching him do his work.
“Sungmin hyung brought pizza. For celebration of today. You should join us.”
“Really? Sure!” She answered, her mood rising up as she totally forgot about sleeping. She left the room with Ryeowook, and they chatted in low voice as they went to theit station. Sungmin was there alone, the box of pizza placed on the table behind the counter.
“Oh! You’re joining us! Good!” The older male cheered, rushing her to sit down next to him.
“It’s only the four of us that will finish this pizza.” Ryeowook then said.
“Four? Who’s the other one?” She asked. There were only the three of them present there. And she haven’t seen any of the female nurses’ clipboards.
“I won’t miss Valentines here.” Her body stiffened, hearing that familiar voice. Kyuhyun suddenly appeared, standing in front of the counter. And there’s his angelic smile once again.
She mentally cursed herself. How can he just show up all of a sudden?!!
“Happy Valentines Vanessa.” He greeted her as he looked at her directly. She chose to look down on ehr fingers because of embarassment. Kyuhyun is just killing her silently.
“S-same here, t-to you.” She can’t really look at him straight. The fluttering feeling he gives her gets stronger everytime.
“So, aren’t we going to eat? Or what?” Sungmin broke off the awkward silence, opening the box of pizza.
So she was wrong. Her Valentines Day wasn’t ruined after all. Kyuhyun still completed it.
“He’s not here, Vanessa. Sorry.” Sungmin apologetically told her when she was saying her goodbyes to them. Her brother was preparing to get out of the hospital already. They were just waiting for their service to pick them up.
“Ani. It’s okay.” She tried to hide her disappointment but Sungmin seemed to be an expert when it comes to reading someone’s emotion. She’s currently inside the nurse station again with Sungmin. She decided to join him there since that would be her last time in that hopsital.
While Sungmin excused himself for a while, and she busied herself scanning Kyuhyun’s clipboard. She would surely miss seeing him bring that metal clipboard all the time. Aish. She became a melodramatic girl ever since she saw that guy.
Her eyes caught something. A colorful sticky note. She excitedly took one and grabbed one of the ballpens there. She doesn’t have to think anymore of what to write. Every word she wrote down came out automatically.
We’ll be going already. I will surely miss you busy angel. Don’t stress yourself too much. Take care of yourself first before anyone else. Don’t call or text me either. Just do all of your routines before we met. I’ll wait for you for our right time together. See you again Kyuhyun-ssi. Me loves you. ^_^
She just spilled her thoughts on that simple note. It really seemed like it’s not yet her time for Kyuhyun. There’s a lot of things to consider between the two of them.
“Do not read this note!” She warned Sungmin when he was about to open the clipboard. She snatched it away from him, placing it on the opposite side of the table.
“Arasso! It’s only for Kyuhyun. I know, i know.” He surrendered, even raising his hands to show defeat. Sungmin just chuckled, sticking out his tongue as he watched her organize the clipboard.
“Vanessa. The driver’s here already.”
“Oh well. This seems goodbye Sungmin-ssi.” She told Sungmin, getting up from her seat. Her mother and her brother were already heading to the elevator.
“Visit here when you have time beautiful.” Sungmin reminded her as he gave her a hug.
“You’re a nurse here. Not a patient.” She joked, Sungmin flicking her forehead gently.
“Aigoo. You’re leaving without saying goodbye to me?” Her heart skipped a beat, as his voice registered in her mind.
Damn! Kyuhyun!! Where the hell had he been all this time?!
“Huh? Uhm, b-bye Kyuhyun-ssi.” She did a 90 degree bow, avoiding his eyes.
The note. He would surely see it anytime soon.
The only solution she thought of? Run towards the direction of the elevator as fast as she can. Which she did. Thankfully, like luck is on her side, the door opened as soon as she got there. Her mother even gave her the weird look which she ignored. She’s too busy catching up with her breath to mind their teasings.
Days. Weeks. Months passed by so easily for her. But there’s one thing that she didn’t forgot. Make that someone. A day never passed by without him crossing her mind, driving her nuts.
The handsome and angelic nurse. Cho Kyuhyun.
She misses him. Months had passed by already since she ran off like a silly kid away from him. Just because of her stupidity of not even checking the nurse’s quarters if he’s there. Thinking of Kyuhyun’s possible reaction, he would’ve surely think that she’s some crazy fan girl.
And to her surprise, he really did as she said on the note. To never call or text her. She haven’t receive any single text nor call from him. Maybe she’s really a nobody to him after all. Just some plain acquaintance.
“Aish. Just move on from him Vanessa! You’re going crazy over someon you barely knew.” She scolded herself, sighing as she was heading to the coffee shop where her mom told her to come.
She glanced at her watch, seeing that she still has five minutes before the given time that her mom told her. The cafe seemed cozy and welcoming to her, the moment she stepped inside. A cute girl wearing the cafe uniform greeted her before her eyes landed on her mother who’s waiting patiently on one table.
“What are we going to do here omma?” Her curiousity urged her to ask. Her mom rarely visits places like that coffee shop. She prefers salons and boutiques.
“Oh. I’m with a friend. And I want you to meet each other.” She just nodded, showing that she’s intersted. It’s surely one of the ahjummas that’s like her mother, glamorous and fab ahjummas.
“You’re not setting me up on a blind date, rigth omma?” The idea just entered her mind all of a sudden. There’s a possibilty her mother is doing it.
“Just wait okay? I’m sure you’ll be surprised.” The old lady just gave her a weird smile, a trick probably playing in her mind.
A few minutes passed by and the sound of the door chime filled the whole place, indicating someone’s arrival. She saw how her mother’s eyes flickered in happiness looking at someone behind her. Yet she didn’t even bother to turn around. It’s just probably some good looking guy that caught her mom’s attention.
Or maybe not just some guy.
“It’s been quite some time, isn’t it Vanessa?” Because the owner of that soothing voice is not just any ordinaru good looking guy to her.
Cho Kyuhyun!
“Kyuhyun-ssi, meet my daughter. Vanessa.” Her mom introduced her, a proud smile on her face. She then turned to her. “Vanessa, Cho Kyuhyun. The friend I’m telling you that wants to meet you.”
“You said that a few months ago wasn’t the right time for us yet. I say, this is the right time then for us. Don’t you think Vanessa?”
